11 Commandments of Safe Computing

I first met the computer in 1999's summer during my 7th year in the school. I was totally new to the world of internet and computers and all I knew was that yahoo.com was the doorway to the internet and road rash was a game with awesome graphics! I spent many hours sitting in front of the computer wondering and trying to understand how does the computer respond when I do some thing in particular. It was a slow transformation which made me demystify the computer world as I know today. My suggestion to all the wanna be computer enthusiasts would be to stop fearing that some thing will go wrong to the computer if you click your mouse! Sure if u click on the wrong places it'd go wrong but Microsoft isn't a fool to put the dangerous places on easy locations. After realizing the fact that any problem in computer is rectifiable with a relative amount of hardwork involved. I started to keenly observe the computer guys who used to come to our home to repair problems on our computer. Like net not working, printer not printing, speaker not giving sound etc..and luckily it didn't take me long to realize these guys were total goons! (I'l put my funny experiences with them some other time)..What the point I'm trying to score over here is that if you have confidence in yourself and the right min, working with the computer is like breeze! Same goes with the internet. If you click on the right places and don't wander here n there on misleading links, you'l never get a virus or spyware attacking your computer! Let me put forward my commandments for Happy Computing!

  1. Think of the computer as an obedient servant who has kept every thing in place, only thing is he's dumb enough to understand what you want and this expects you to direct him to do it!
  2. In the beginning while exploring your computer don't make any changes to the folders like C:\Windows (and all it's subfolders), C:\Program Files, C:\Documents n Settings (all folders apart from Documents, and Desktop). Experienced users would say there's no harm in fiddling around with the above mentioned folders (infact the action lies there!) but it's for your own good in order not to get kicks from ur parents
  3. Never open or delete files with extensions like .dll, .sys, or any thing which says it is a system file.
  4. Always Remove Programs from Control Panel -> Add remove Programs, don't ever just delete the entry from start menu n desktop assuming the program's removed nor by just clearing the Program Files Folder, cos u gotta inform windows to remove all traces and references made to that particular program.
  5. Extensively Use window's help and support with carefully choosing the keywords you search with. If you get stuck in trying to find out something don't panic but put the problem precisely in the search and patiently read through the search results! MS ppl have done their documentation right.
  6. If you have an antivirus then update it regularly. Also download Spybot Search and Destroy from the net to get rid of Malwares.
  7. Remember that exploring the commonly known softwares and settings in the control panel won't do any harm to your computer which can't be recovered!
  8. Lot many times you'd be told to download some file in order to run a particular file.

Choice 1 : don't download what they are offering because it's sure to be a malware

Choice 2: If the name of the provider seems to come from familiar names like, yahoo, adobe, macromedia, google, microsoft etc then go ahead.

  9. Do not click on the advertisements how so ever tempting they seem! Like Win prizes, download new songs, Click to smash the baloon etc.. They are all inviting you to download virus on your mobile.
  10. Never ever download a file which you are not sure of it's where abouts and has an extension .exe or .zip, unless it's an attachment from a familiar friend or you are trying to download a file which you are sure of!
  11. If you are ever in trouble remember of two friends, Google and Me. Ask google first and search for a solution yourself if you are unable to do so ask me! I'l help you out.. Reach me on krazineurons@gmail.com, cool_braniac@yahoo.com (on yahoo messenger)
